Macao Superfood Smoothie (maca-cacao)

Came up with another superfood smoothie today, this time with Maca root powder and Cacao nibs. Here’s the recipe:

2 frozen Bananas
8 oz unsweetened vanilla Almond Milk
1 tbsp Maca Powder
1 tbsp Cacao Nibs

Blend and enjoy! Here are the benefits of adding this smoothie to your diet:

Maca Root is an adaptogenic superfood that “increases energy, endurance, oxygen in the blood, physical strength, neurotransmitter production, and libido. It supports the endocrine system, the adrenals, and the thyroid, typically improves one’s mood, and helps support healthy hormone production. (Wolfe 2009:70)”

Research on Cacao shows that it may be beneficial in “increasing brain blood flow and enhancing brain function” (Wolfe 2009:39). Cacao is also “the best natural food source” of antioxidants, magnesium, iron, chromium, manganese, zinc, copper, vitamin C, omega-6 fatty acids, phenylethylamine (the love chemicals, which also play a role in increasing focus and alertness), Anandamide (the feel good or “bliss chemical”), tryptophan (enhancs serotonin function to diminish anxiety and reduce stress), and fiber (Wolfe 2009:40-41).

    • I actually cannot eat them because of a food intolerance, but my roommate LOVES them (I made the smoothie for her). She has at least a couple tablespoons a day and says that they immediately improve her alertness. She has been using them as a substitute for coffee and finds them to be a real mood booster as well.
